Do celebrities get paid to appear on talk shows?

I'm purely curious about this: does anyone know if famous people (or I suppose, normal people too) get paid when they appear on talk shows like Oprah, Ellen, Letterman, Daily Show, etc? I know that publicity is part of the incentive to appear on tv, but do they receive actual payment as well?
