How to formally address someone when you don't know their gender?

I'm applying for various jobs and am not sure how to address my cover letter when I'm not sure of the person's gender. While I would usually write "Dear Mr. Smith," I don't know how to address the letter when the contact's name is something androgynous/foreign (i.e. Jamie or Xiang). Any ideas? I don't like the idea of just putting "Dear Sir or Madam" since it seems impersonal.
