Is it okay to use debit card to shop online like paypal and amazon?

I have a debit card with a mastercard logo in it. Is it the same with a credit card? Is it safe to use it? i mean, is my account safe if i shop using paypal or amazon? Please help/guide me coz its my first time to do online shopping. thanks!
